# World — Growth & Monetisation Plan

## The honest reality

Getting **millions of users** and **real revenue** from a data dashboard is achievable, but it takes 12-24 months of consistent work plus some money to spend on marketing. The product is the easy part — distribution is the hard part.

This document is the plan. It's grouped into three time horizons: **first 90 days**, **3-12 months**, and **year 2+**.

---

## What you have right now

A 28-tab data dashboard with curated content + live API feeds from NASA, USGS, Open-Meteo, Wikipedia, World Bank, etc. **Estimated value as-is: free utility, no audience yet.** That's where most projects die — at zero distribution.

---

## Phase 1 — First 90 days (build foundation, validate)

**Goal: 1,000 daily active users**

### Pick one audience, not "everyone"

A dashboard "for everyone" gets no-one excited. Pick ONE of these and rebuild the homepage to serve them:

1. **Investors / day-traders** — Markets + Currencies + Crypto + News as the main tabs. Add real-time alerts. Income potential: $$$$.
2. **Travellers / digital nomads** — Travel + Weather + Currencies + Country Profiles + Cost of Living. Income: travel affiliate links. $$$.
3. **News junkies / data nerds** — Worldometer + OWID Insights + News + Digital 2026. Income: ads + newsletter. $$.
4. **Students / teachers** — History + Science + Countries + Records. Income: education partnerships. $.
5. **Crypto / Web3 enthusiasts** — Markets + Crypto deep-dive + News. Income: exchange affiliate. $$$$.

**My recommendation: Option 1 (investors) or Option 2 (travellers).** They convert best and have proven willingness to pay.

### Pick a name and a domain

`world.netlify.app` won't get millions of users. You need:
- A real `.com` domain ($12/year on Cloudflare or Namecheap)
- A memorable single-word or two-word name
- Suggestions: `LiveWorld.io`, `Pulse.world`, `OneScreen.world`, `WorldNow.live`, `Glimpse.world`

### Add the basics that drive growth

✓ **Email signup** — capture every visitor's email (already added below)
✓ **Share button** — let users post "Look at this dashboard"
✓ **SEO landing pages** — separate page for each major topic, so Google indexes
✓ **OG image** — when shared on Twitter/LinkedIn/iMessage, looks good
✓ **Analytics** — install Plausible ($9/mo) or Google Analytics (free) to know what works
✓ **Cookie banner** if EU traffic (use Cookiebot)

### Distribution: actually get the first 1,000 users

Pick **two channels** and execute weekly:

**Hacker News & Reddit launch**
- "Show HN: I built a 28-tab world dashboard"
- Post in r/dataisbeautiful, r/internetisbeautiful
- Realistic outcome: 5,000-50,000 visitors in 24h if it hits front page, ~1% sign up to email
- Have your email signup ready

**Twitter / X strategy**
- Post one data viz per day pulled from your dashboard
- "Did you know 9.5% of the world lives on <$3/day, down from 79% in 1820?" + screenshot of your OWID tab
- Tag relevant accounts (@OurWorldInData, @MaxRoser)
- Goal: get one viral tweet per month
- Income from this: zero for first 6 months, but builds audience

**Product Hunt launch**
- Save it for when the product is polished and you have ~500 email subs to vote on launch day
- Hunter status helps — find a known hunter to launch you
- Realistic outcome: 1,000-5,000 sign-ups in one day if you make Top 5

---

## Phase 2 — Months 3-12 (monetise the audience)

**Goal: 50,000 monthly users, first revenue**

### Revenue streams (in order of how much you'll likely make)

**1. Travel affiliate (if you went with the traveller audience)** — $$$$
- Booking.com Affiliate: 25-40% revenue share
- Expedia, Hotels.com, Agoda, Skyscanner — all pay $5-50 per booking
- Add to your Travel and Country Profile tabs: "Find hotels in [city]" buttons
- Realistic income: at 50k MAU traveller-focused, $2-10k/month

**2. Brokerage / crypto affiliate (if you went with investors)** — $$$$
- Interactive Brokers, eToro, Robinhood, Coinbase, Kraken — $50-200 per funded signup
- Add to Markets tab: "Open a brokerage account" button with affiliate code
- Realistic income: at 50k MAU investor-focused, $5-20k/month if you convert well

**3. Pro subscription** — $$$
- $5-10/mo for: real-time alerts, custom watchlists, ad-free, API access, no rate limits, export to CSV, multi-currency display
- Stripe integration (~$50 to set up)
- Realistic conversion: 2-5% of active users → 1,000-2,500 paid at 50k MAU = $5-25k/month
- This is **recurring revenue** — much more valuable than one-off affiliate

**4. Newsletter sponsorship** — $$
- Daily/weekly "World in Numbers" email with one stat + dashboard link
- Once you hit 10k subscribers, you can charge $200-500 per send for sponsored slot
- Realistic at 50k subs: $2-5k/month

**5. Display ads (last resort — hurts UX)** — $
- Google AdSense: $1-3 RPM for general audience (so 50k MAU ≈ $50-150/month — barely worth it)
- Carbon Ads (tech audience): $5-15 RPM but selective
- Mediavine (requires 50k sessions/mo): $20-30 RPM — this is when ads start paying

### Content & SEO machine

Most traffic to a long-running site comes from **Google search**, not viral posts. To rank, you need content that answers specific questions:

- "What is the population of [country]?" page for every country (you already have the data — make individual pages)
- "[Currency 1] to [Currency 2] converter" — every currency pair
- "Air quality in [city]" — every city
- "Time in [city]" — every clock
- "[Country] vs [Country] comparison"
- Each gets indexed, ranks for long-tail keywords, brings in evergreen traffic

This is the unsexy work that 99% of side-projects skip — and it's why they fail to grow.

---

## Phase 3 — Year 2+ (scale to millions)

**Goal: 1,000,000+ monthly users**

By now you've validated which audience converts and which features drive retention. Time to scale:

### Hire help (if revenue allows)
- **One content writer** ($2-4k/month) writing daily SEO posts using your data
- **One social media person** ($1-2k/month) running TikTok + Instagram with daily data infographics

### Mobile app
- Wrap your dashboard in a React Native or Capacitor shell
- Push notifications drive 5-10× return visits
- App Store featured spots = huge organic growth
- Cost: $5-15k for solid v1, or $0 if you build it yourself

### Partnerships
- Get cited by journalists ("As reported by World Dashboard…") — pitch story angles based on your live data
- Partner with one of your data sources (e.g., DataReportal) for cross-promotion
- White-label the dashboard for one or two media companies — $5-20k contracts

### When you hit 100k+ MAU
- A buyer might emerge (data aggregators, ad networks, financial media)
- Typical SaaS exit: 3-5× annual revenue
- A dashboard doing $10k/mo MRR could sell for $300k-600k

---

## The brutally honest numbers

| Stage | MAU | Realistic timeline | Monthly revenue |
|-------|-----|--------------------|-----------------|
| Hobby project | 100 | Week 1 | $0 |
| First traction | 5,000 | Month 3-6 | $0-200 |
| Validated product | 50,000 | Month 9-18 | $2k-25k |
| Real business | 250,000 | Year 2 | $10k-100k |
| Acquirable | 1,000,000+ | Year 3-5 | $50k-500k |

**90% of side projects never get past stage 2.** What separates the 10% is:
1. Picking one specific audience
2. Doing distribution work weekly (not waiting for "viral")
3. Setting up monetisation **before** you have traffic, not after
4. Writing SEO content consistently for 12+ months
5. Not abandoning when it's slow (it's always slow for the first year)

---

## Your immediate next 5 actions

1. **Pick the audience** (investor OR traveller — choose ONE this week)
2. **Buy a domain** (~$12) — `[name].com` or `[name].world` or `[name].io`
3. **Sign up for Stripe** (free, takes 20 min) so you can collect money later
4. **Install Plausible Analytics** ($9/mo) — you can't improve what you don't measure
5. **Post on Hacker News** — Sunday or Tuesday morning UK time, "Show HN: I built a 28-tab world dashboard"

I've added the monetisation scaffolding to your dashboard so it's ready: a "Support" tab with newsletter signup, Pro upgrade pitch, donate links, and affiliate-link slots. Add your own Stripe/affiliate codes when you have them.

---

Good luck. The product is genuinely impressive. The growth and revenue won't appear by themselves — but the path to them is well-trodden.
