The formula, and the one choice that matters

Annual salary = hourly rate × hours a week × paid weeks a year. At £15 an hour for a 37.5-hour week that is £15 × 37.5 × 52 = £29,250, or £2,437.50 a month before tax.

The only judgement is the number of weeks. An employee with paid holiday is paid for all 52 weeks whether or not they work them, so 52 is right. A contractor, agency or zero-hours worker is paid only for weeks worked — if you take four weeks off unpaid, use 48, and the same £15 becomes £27,000. That difference is exactly what a salaried job's holiday pay is worth.

What you actually take home

The take-home lines use the same 2026/27 engine as our take-home pay calculator: income tax with the £12,570 personal allowance, and National Insurance at 8% above £12,570. At £15 an hour on 37.5 hours, the £29,250 salary keeps about £24,580 a year — roughly £12.60 for every hour worked, or 84p in the pound. The per-hour take-home is the number to compare against a job offer quoted as a salary, because that is what an hour of your time is worth after tax at that rate. Pensions, student loans and Scottish rates change it; the take-home page handles all three.

Checking against the minimum wage

From 1 April 2026 the legal minimum is £12.71 an hour at 21 and over (the National Living Wage), £10.85 at 18 to 20, and £8.00 under 18 and for apprentices under 19 or in their first year. The calculator above checks your rate against your age band. Rates change every April — the official table is at gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates — the figure that matters is your total pay divided by your total hours, including any unpaid time you are required to be at work.

Common questions

How do I convert an hourly rate to an annual salary?

Multiply the hourly rate by the hours you work a week, then by the weeks you are paid for. £15 × 37.5 × 52 = £29,250 a year.

What is £15 an hour as a salary in the UK?

£29,250 a year on a 37.5-hour week with paid holiday, or £31,200 on 40 hours. After income tax and National Insurance in 2026/27 the 37.5-hour figure is about £24,580 take-home.

Should I use 52 weeks or 48?

52 if you are an employee with paid holiday, because you are paid for those weeks. 48 (or whatever you actually work) if you are paid only for hours worked, such as agency, contract or zero-hours work.

What is a 37.5-hour week per month?

37.5 hours × 52 weeks ÷ 12 = 162.5 paid hours a month. Multiply your hourly rate by 162.5 for the monthly figure — £15 an hour is £2,437.50.

Does the calculator include tax?

The salary lines are before tax. The take-home lines apply 2026/27 income tax and National Insurance for England with no pension or student loan; for Scotland, pensions and loans use the take-home pay calculator.
